The Woman in Black

So last night I went to see The Woman in Black, which was hyped up to be “The horror movie of the year” (I’m not quite sure how this statement works as it’s only Feb).

As an avid horror/paranormal sub-genre fan I was eager for this film to be a winner, to be the one film that would actually scare me into sleepless nights with the light on, hiding under the duvet. This did not happen.

I thought the storyline, the actors, the production and the simplicity of it all were fantastic. There were no special effects, just good old fashioned spookiness, things that go bump in the night, creepy kids and the stereotypical haunted house. It all worked well together, pretty much flawlessly, however it was too predictable.

I knew what would happen before it did. I knew where the story was going without having read the book. I knew when the girls behind me would be screaming. I knew once it had started, that I would be falling asleep straight away that night (with the light off).

I’m not regretting seeing it, as I wasn’t bored at any point throughout the film. Like I said before, the characters and plot kept my attention. I just wish it had that little something extra that would make it really special.

If you scare easily then I would recommend this film to you. If like me, you need something that really hits you hard, then this is probably too tame. I’m still hunting for that perfect horror!!
